Bulky hat that is a quick knit
This is the Sound that you’ve been looking for! This bulky knit is as quick as it is easy. I’ll bet you can’t make just one!
December 21, 2020
When I found out I was traveling to Alaska in December, I knew that I was going to need some hats to keep me warm while out photographing in the snow. The temps were showing in the negatives - yikes! While I was there, it dropped to -27 degrees Fahrenheit at one point and I was sure glad to have a warm hat for my cold noggin! There were a couple of times when my hair literally froze - no joke!
As I was looking for yarns, I knew I wanted something that was super bulky, single ply, and colorful. I’ve always loved Malabrigo Rasta, but after living in Los Angeles for most of my knitting life, I never had any excuses to purchase such a warm or thick yarn. And now I had a reason to!
I ordered several skeins of yarn so that I could whip up some hats in several different colors. Sadly, as I was packing, I forgot how much space cold weather clothes take up and I had to scale back on my hat collection. But the three hats that I did take to Alaska with me were well used, much appreciated, and I even sold one to a fellow photographer!
When designing with bulky yarn, it’s about keeping the stitch pattern simple, but interesting. I love how cables look in bulky yarns, but it is usually too heavy to put cables into a larger garment, so a hat is the perfect place to cable it up!
Sometimes it is hard to choose a color, but because this hat knits up so quickly, you don’t have to make just one. Choosing a color for the pom pom was also a lot of fun. This faux fur pom is truly the cherry on top of this hat. This hat kept me warm in the coldest of temperatures and I hope yours does as well! Enjoy the This is the Sound Hat pattern and be sure and tag @knitsyknits and #explorewithknitsy to show off your creation; I’d love to see what colors you chose!
